53rd Annual Melodrama
If You’re Happy & You Know It Say, “Hooray!” or
The Untimely Sinking of The Bertrand
Show Dates: May 11, 12, & 13, 2017, 7pm
Auditions: February 12 & 13, 7pm, Florence City Hall

The Florence Theater continues it’s 2017 season with a Florence tradition: the 53rd Annual Melodrama. This year’s melodrama is written by Nebraska natives Derek Kowal and David Frolio. There’s music, there’s laughter, there’s intrigue — all delivered in the most melodramatic of fashions!

The show is based loosely on a chapter in the history of this area.  On April 1, 1965, the Steamboat Bertrand hit a log in the Missouri River and began to sink.  This is considered “Omaha’s only shipwreck.”  The good news about this sinking is that no lives were lost.  In fact the crew lowered the front plank of the boat and everyone walked off onto shore.  The show begins with the steamboat stopped in Omaha, where our Hero gains employment on the boat.  There he meets an array of humorous characters, along with the love of his life, who is currently engaged to be married to our villain.  The villain is hatching a plan that involves blowing up the boat so he can escape with all the money he has won playing poker and the inheritance of our beloved heroine and her sister.

Cast size is 20 – 26, and it’s a split on male versus female, but there are roles that are flexible.
